new Garmin eTrex looks promising September 29, 2011 04:09:58The new 10/20/30 series eTrex are arriving at retailers and a couple of coworkers and I took a look. From the Garmin sites comparison tool, a GPS 62s and eTrex 30 are virtually identical with the eTrex costing $150 less at $299 retail. If you can do with out electronic 3-axis compass, you save $250 with the model 20.
Differences are eTrex has a more square display but roughly similar in size. The display is brighter to me. Battery life is better. eTrex can optionally... - [ Read more] |

[Trip Report] LaDee Flats/NF-4610 September 11th, 2011 September 13, 2011 03:57:21Some of you may have heard of LaDee Flats, the new officially sanctioned OHV area in the Mt Hood National Forest. It is located along the 4610 road north of the Clackamas River, just a few miles east of Estacada. I got together with a few NAXJA guys, along with a couple others to go explore the area.
You can read all about the trip on my newest blog post. (Its only been a year!)

Safari Racks? September 12, 2011 03:53:13Id like to get a safari rack (of some kind) for my 2009 Toyota 4Runner - just something to strap on an extra gas can, hi-lift, shovel, etc. The Yakima racks look good, but Ive read that they "shake off" while driving on washboard roads. Does anyone have direct experience with these? Do they stay on or not? Ive also been looking at the Surco racks, but Im not sure whether you need to buy a separate mounting adapter, or if they bolt-on as-is. Also, Im not sure how easy they are... - [ Read more] |
To Hell and back September 11, 2011 20:04:00Cascades Explorer trip report 9 Sep 2011
A great drive thru the Cascades to Wolf Rock, Hell Hole and Bohemia Ridge/Fairview Lookout.
Friday (9 Sep) we headed south on I5 at first light then turned right at Salem and drove to Mehama. I wanted to check out Shelburg Falls but I drove in from the west and that way was gated. Another time.
We then drove south along the foothills from Lyons to Sweet Home. I had not been thru... - [ Read more] |

McKBrews 2004 4Runner Build Thread September 2, 2011 00:17:25If youve caught my other post, you know I traded in my 2009 JK Wrangler Unlimited on a 2004 Toyota 4 Runner.
I figured I might as well start a "build thread". Itll be a long time before I actually get too far as Im not rushing into it like I did with the Jeep. Ill do it once and do it right. Although I said the same thing with the Jeep, this truly will be the last vehicle I buy for a long time (unless I get lucky on Powerball or Megamillions ). ... - [ Read more] |

Im Troy, in Bend, Oregon. Havent done much off-road traveling but have slowly been working toward it. Grew up on dirtbikes, have done significant dual-sport riding and a handful of long motorcycle camping trips (3 to 15 days). Sold the bikes a while back to try traveling on four wheels. Im always liable to drift into a myriad of other sports and activities, but for now Im focusing on mountain... - [ Read more] |

Tire Gate Swing Away question May 8, 2011 16:00:29Whyd ya close the thread, Jerry? I wanted to ask if theres an antenna mounting location on that and if youd considered putting your HAM or CB antenna on it. Ive always thought those racks were good places to mount an antenna. (Of course, Im coming at it from a soft-top CJ-5 perspective!)
Looks like you still have plenty of room on the right to mount a second spare!
Cool setup, Jerry.... - [Read more] |
Hello from BC -T he Shuswap May 8, 2011 14:54:51We are a retired couple driving a 10 Eddie Bauer. Weve been travelling together for fifty years and are selling our Class A because it didnt take us where we want to go. At the end of the month we will do 3 weeks in eastern WA, ID, WY and OR on secondary and forestry routes. Were keeping the 98 TJ for local rides. In July we will do the WA overland rally getting there via the WABDR and this Fall we will head to the eastern seaboard for our 4th cross-continent trip. - [Read more] |
timeout May 8, 2011 02:58:40Im not the fastest on posting. Sometimes it may take me 2-3 or more minutes. At this site I have found that by the time I click "submit", Im already logged (back) out. Is that to keep windy/wordy and slow old farts like me from posting, or for some other reason? - [Read more] |
