Links Sort by: Date | Hits | AlphabeticalHelp Another Native American Womens Shelter? August 6, 2008 06:01:01If not, just skip this diary. It will annoy the hell out of you.
KELO in Sioux Falls did the introduction to this situation for me:
Sioux Falls shelter for women and children who have been abused is at risk of shutting down.
The shelter has been running on grants and federal funding since 2000, but those grants are coming to an end. Now the director says the women at the shelter may have to move out.
The Mita Maske Ti Ki shelter, which means "My Sister Friends... - [Read more] |

Honoring Our Warriors This Memorial Day January 1, 1970 00:00:00Although remembrance of our warriors should continue throughout the year, Memorial Day is a special day in which we are reminded to honor all warriors who fought in protecting their villages, against other tribes, either for or against the French, British and Americans, the Civil War, and wars overseas.
When one thinks of American Indians and wars overseas, the first who come to mind are probably the Code Breakers of WWI and WWII. Although these brave men are... - [Read more] |
How To Rape A Woman And Get Away With It July 21, 2008 18:50:28This title is not an exaggeration or misstatement, although I really wish it were. I did not go to Netroots Nation to learn that it was possible to rape a woman, right here in the United States and walk away with absolutely no consequences to the rapist. But thats what I learned in a panel discussion on Friday morning.
Come over the fold and Ill tell you exactly how this happens - and you can take an action, a small first step towards ending this nightmare. How to rape a woman and... - [Read more] |
Humor and Pretend Indians January 1, 1970 00:00:00Each school season thousands of public school children nationwide are subjected to the stereotyping of American Indians, along with being taught a mixture of twisted traditions and history. The nationwide general public is often subjected to the same misrepresentations at public library programs, wannabe activities, and events such as diversity fairs. Some of the pretend Indian organizations have gone as far as establish an “American Indian Education Task Force” to help them reach... - [Read more] |
Husband Heads to the Doghouse January 1, 1970 00:00:00A Dad guest blogger has a message to his wife: If youre unhappy with how you look and want to lose weight, then quit complaining and do something about it. And one way to do this is to start at home. - [Read more] |
I am not a Redskin July 14, 2008 15:15:22Last week the Washington Redskins scored a legal victory for themselves and another moral failure for American Judicial system. Patent and Trademark law and the investment of millions of dollars into a racist name and a stereotyped image assured another few years of denigrating headlines, repeated televised use of an outdated slur, and the continued monolithic pace of American jurisprudence.
Last week the Washington Redskins scored a legal victory for themselves and another... - [Read more] |
IACA Board Under Attack For Supporting P.L. 101-644 January 1, 1970 00:00:00Originally Posted 27 March, 2008
Recently, the Indian Arts and Crafts Board has been under attack through Vermont newspapers for it’s stand in requiring artisans protected under the Act to be members of a Federal or State recognized tribe - and not individuals who self-identify as Indians and who are not members of a recognized tribe. Who are these individuals and organizations that have made the attacks?
The decade of the 1970’s... - [Read more] |
Imagery, Irony and Absaroka: The NYTimes and the Language of Racism July 24, 2008 23:05:03First off, Im a HUGE fan of the NYTimes. I think the decline of the newspaper is a terrible thing. Im a big time news junkie. Ive been reading the Times everyday for the last eight years. But Im also a Native American attorney who has studied Critical Race Theory and am highly sensitive to images of cultural stereotypes. Imagine my reaction as I came to work early to read the papers and saw the image below before I went to DC District Court this morning for a... - [Read more] |
In Response To “Anonymous” January 1, 1970 00:00:00This is in response to the comment by ““ Anonymous” that there “MUST be no indigenous rights any longer“ and his/her attempt at a supporting argument. Please read this person’s comment made to the Makah whale hunt post first . As for my “whimpering“, I invite the writer to come stand in front of me and see just how much whimpering I am doing.
The writer’s position shows that many who oppose the gathering of marine mammals for sustenance have... - [Read more] |
In Support Of Fake Tribes January 1, 1970 00:00:00It’s amazing why real Indians continue to provide nourishment and support to known fraudulent “tribes”. In doing so, they are pounding nails into the coffin of the American Indian, assisting in the revision of American Indian history, furthering the destruction of tribal traditions, and legitimizing the victimization of those who are seeking a connection with an American Indian ancestry.
It would be hard to speculate what actually drives a certain Indian... - [Read more] |
Introducing My Sister Friends House August 13, 2008 05:40:34I know times are tough right now; a lot of people are out of work, others are working two or three jobs to make ends meet. Prices are rising on the necessities.
But I am asking you to stop and see if you have $20 or $10 or even $5 to spare for My Sister Friends House - Mita Maske Ti Ki, a Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault shelter for women and children.
They have lost their grant funding and face closure by September if they... - [Read more] |

Italian Politics And The American Indian January 1, 1970 00:00:00The “Lega Nord per lIndipendenza della Padania”, short name “Lega Nord”, was founded as a federation of eight regional political parties of Northern and Central Italy in 1991. The party advocates autonomy from Rome for regions in Northern Italy, which was called “Padania“ by early geographers.
