Links Sort by: Date | Hits | AlphabeticalHillary Gets Worst Reviews Yet October 31, 2007 10:43:15The usual flood of editorials and blog posts after a major presidential debate were particularly harsh on Hillary Clinton this morning following Tuesday night’s Democratic debate at Drexel University. Opinion leaders said her performance reinforced negative stereotypes that Clinton is shrill, calculating and evasive. - [Read more] |
House Bill Would End D.C. Registration Rules July 30, 2008 09:20:43D.C. officials are trying to beat back an effort by some lawmakers to send a bill to the House floor that would bring D.C. gun laws into compliance with the Heller decision. The gun bill, co-sponsored by Reps. Mike Ross (D-Ark.) and Mark Souder (R-Ind.), was introduced previously and stalled. The measure now stands a good chance of gaining approval by the House of Representatives because of an unusual legislative maneuver, congressional staff members and observers said. - [Read more] |
House draws the line at oversized firearms fee August 4, 2008 09:51:08The House this week sounded a small note of equity and restraint in a landscape of ever-escalating fees and taxes for Massachusetts residents, rejecting Gov. Deval L. Patrick’s call for a 150 percent increase in gun licensing fees. - [Read more] |
House GOP files gun bill discharge petition July 24, 2008 20:33:13Republicans on Thursday filed a discharge petition to bring a gun bill to the House floor, putting pressure on conservative Democrats to buck their leadership on the issue.
Rep. Mark Souder (R-Ind.) filed the petition to bring to a vote a bill by Rep. Mike Ross (D-Ark.) that would erase many of the District of Columbia’s gun laws. Sounder’s move is a follow-up to the recent Supreme Court ruling rejecting the District’s gun ban. - [Read more] |
How gun control lost June 30, 2008 09:45:04Thomas Jefferson once wrote, pessimistically, "The natural progress of things is for liberty to yield and government to gain ground." He would probably not have been surprised to see the proliferation of gun-control laws in our time. But he might not have anticipated that the water would run back uphill. - [Read more] |
Ignoring the court July 17, 2008 09:40:55It`s been barely three weeks since the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the Second Amendment, tossing the District of Columbia`s strict ban on handgun ownership as an unconstitutional infringement on the individual right to bear arms. As you`d expect, D.C. officials have been busy little bureaucrats since then, trying to figure out a way to get around the high court`s decision. On Monday, the D.C. council announced emergency legislation designed to update the gun ban. As expected, it`s a joke. - [Read more] |
Illinois: Boone County Board Votes on Resolution to Support Concealed Carry August 15, 2008 10:20:36Boone County is the latest to take up the issue of concealed carry. Board members approved a symbolic resolution in support of it. Just like in Winnebago County, the issue of concealed carry has come up several times in Boone County. On Wednesday, it joins 77 other counties that have stated their support for the house bill on concealed carry in Springfield. - [Read more] |
In defense of carry August 5, 2008 10:31:30There has been substantial debate on the subject of conceal carry in The Daily Texan lately, but regrettably, much of the information that has been presented seriously misrepresents and even falsifies the critical legal and moral aspects of concealed carry. - [Read more] |
Is buying a gun a suicidal act? July 14, 2008 09:55:50Americans often buy guns for self-defense, a purpose that now has Supreme Court validation. But according to advocates of gun control, those purchasers overlook the people who pose the greatest threat: themselves. Anyone who acquires a firearm, we are told, is inviting a bloody death by suicide. As it turns out, the claims about guns and suicide don`t stand up well to scrutiny. - [Read more] |
Is It Time for Federal Reciprocity of Concealed Carry Permits? August 8, 2008 09:47:23There are at least two strong justifications for national reciprocity. The first springs from the Second Amendment itself, where we read that the right to keep and bear arms “shall not be infringed.” With these words, our Founders were hedging in a natural right and thus placing it off limits from federal or state government interference. - [Read more] |
Japan eyes tougher gun, knife controls after crimes July 17, 2008 09:38:15Japan is set to tighten restrictions on guns and knives after a series of fatal shootings and a recent stabbing spree in a Tokyo shopping district in which seven people were killed. A panel of experts has suggested to the government that double-edged blades such as daggers be banned, Chief Cabinet Secretary Nobutaka Machimura said on Thursday. - [Read more] |
Joe for Veep August 20, 2008 09:42:07Clarence Thomas’s 1991 Senate confirmation hearing was one of the most shameful political events of recent American political life. In the wake of Barack Obama’s risible attack on Justice Thomas at Saturday night’s Rick Warren forum, and the continuing buzz about Delaware Democratic Senator Joe Biden’s potential selection as Obama’s running mate, it’s worth rewinding to 1991. - [Read more] |
John Lott: Gun Debate Is Hardly Over July 17, 2008 10:57:15he Supreme Court may have confirmed that Americans have the right to own guns for protection, but the gun debate is hardly over.
