Super Heroes Need Powerful Protein | Avengers 3D 10 hours 14 minutes agoJust a little reminder, May is Beef Month, so I hope you have those grills fired up to scare off the summer night bugs and are enjoying some of my favorite protein. Don’t forget to soak up a little sun too! I had the chance for a brother-sister matinee movie this week and we went [...] - [Read more] |
Graduate School Chronicles of #ThePile May 16, 2012 10:00:02I’ve been a bit absent minded the past few weeks. Between the end of classes, finals, moving back to Middle Tennessee for the summer, cheering on my buddy in the Warrior Dash, and coming home to see the folks, I would have lost my head if it wasn’t screwed on tight. The future doesn’t look [...] Read more] |
The Domino Effect and Rewarding Good Behavior May 14, 2012 16:25:37Reblogged from The Truth About Agriculture: I talk to a lot of teenagers, that is A LOT of teenagers. I’ve found one truth to be universal, they respond to positive feedback, a kind word, a compliment, or a text telling them when you notice them stepping up, and that it was appreciated. Far too often [...] Read more] |
Wordless Wednesday: Word Cloud And My Dirty Job May 8, 2012 22:43:43I found this pretty cool. Here’s the Word Cloud for my blog. Now I have to consider which words should be appearing larger or which words I don’t need to write so much about. I wonder how thorough the engine searched for terms in my blog? Happy Wednesday! I’ve moved back to Middle Tennessee for the summer [...] Read more] |

"Dairy Farmboy" parody song May 8, 2012 12:25:00I came up with some dairy-themed lyrics set to the tune of "Rhinestone Cowboy" several months ago. I never did share them, though, because my singing of the song was awful (even by my low standards). However, Ive now come to the realization that you actually have to have credibility before you can worry about losing it, so I broke out the old FlipCam this morning and put together something I hope wont make your ears bleed too badly. Try your best to enjoy the video below, but make sure... - [ Read more] |
#AgProud Daily – Fresh Newspaper for Agriculture Feeds May 7, 2012 10:00:19This weekend, one of my online efforts reached 108,600 online shares. Wow! A little over a year ago, I created a daily Twitter paper to serve as an aggregate for Agriculture links shared on Twitter and other Social Media feeds. Now that collection includes 3 different papers. It’s a pretty cool way to surf the [...] Read more] |
Want proof? I’ll show you a photo! May 4, 2012 10:00:39I realized yesterday that it might be important to capture a ‘working’ photo of myself, to prove that I actually do work with cows, give guest lectures, and enjoy doing ranch work. Only, there’s a problem – I’m always the one behind the camera. That, or working by myself. It’s not that I just want [...] Read more] |
Ryegrass harvest May 4, 2012 00:04:00
Its been a busy two weeks, but were nearly finished with our ryegrass harvest for this year. Our yields have been comparable to last year, and we should have enough harvested to make it our milking herds primary forage from June until possibly as late as early October. Up to this point we have cut and chopped just over 75 acres with 12-15 more to go. Depending on the weather, we may pass on chopping a few of those acres in favor of rolling a few bales of dry ryegrass... - [ Read more] |
Farmers and Ranchers Get Social at Agvocacy 2.0 May 1, 2012 11:52:59The #AgChat Foundation is headed to Kansas City this summer for the 3rd Annual Agvocacy 2.0 training! I had the awesome opportunity to attend last year’s conference in Nashville. It was an awesome trip and my first to Tennessee. And now I live in Tennessee and am a student at the state’s flagship University! Coincidence? [...] Read more] |
I am not a good fisherman April 29, 2012 21:02:32I’ll never claim to be a good fisherman. As a kid I went pretty regular. On our ranch we had several ponds with catfish, bass, and crappie. Every time the grandparents would come visit we’d be out at the ponds all day and cleaning fish at night. I look back at those days and enjoy [...] - [Read more] |
Photo Friday: On The Business End April 27, 2012 12:15:14This is the last day of classes! Barring two final exams at the end of next week, I have survived my first semester of graduate school! But in classic fashion, as soon as there is something to celebrate, something else goes wrong… I walked into the office at 7 this morning to get some work [...] - [Read more] |
BSE Confirmed In California Cow – Food Supply Safe April 24, 2012 21:26:33On Tuesday, April 24, USDA released a statement confirming a case of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) from a cow in California. The cow did not enter the food chain. There is no threat to the American beef supply. BSE never poses a threat to the milk supply. A single case of BSE does not pose [...] - [Read more] |

Book Review: Lessons From A Desperado Poet – Baxter Black April 16, 2012 10:00:52Lesson #20: Remember, often it’s not ability, it’s reliability. The world is run by those who show up. Back in February while at the the National Cattle Industry Convention, I had the opportunity to meet Baxter Black and receive a copy of his latest book - Lessons from a Desperado Poet: How to find you [...] Read more] |
"Pet" in the pit April 12, 2012 12:32:00We had a momentary visitor in the milking parlors pit this morning. I had been walking back-to-front prepping a new line of cows when I turned around and saw cow #923 standing in the middle of the floor. "Pet", as she has come to be known, either didnt want to be crowded in the holding pen or simply wanted some attention. This isnt the first time shes walked down the ramp into the pit, and shes the kind of cow that always tries to go where shes not supposed to...the kind that would walk... - [ Read more] |
Nashville Farmers Market and Downtown April 10, 2012 10:00:03If you follow me on Facebook and/or Twitter, you’ll notice every time I go downtown in Nashville, there will be a photo posted of the AT&T building – affectionately characterized by some background Batman themed tunes. But that’s not the only thing that really catches my eye in the Music City. Back in August when [...] Read more] |
Road Trip Turns Into Agriculture Education April 6, 2012 13:28:52I’m not sure about you, but to me ‘normal’ Agriculture is what I grew up around. In Arkansas we have fishing and chickens. There’s rice fields and soybeans. We have timber harvest and small herds of cattle. That’s just what I’m familiar with. But after finishing high school I took the opportunity to explore other [...] Read more] |
Wordless Wednesday: (Virtually) Up To Your Armpits April 4, 2012 10:00:24Think I’m kidding? No, really! A U.K. Veterinarian invented this fiberglass cow to help Veterinary students learn how to palpate cows and learn the feel of reproductive organs. We actually have something similar on campus. Read more about this ‘Haptic Cow’ and how it helps veterinary students learn more about cattle reproduction here. Filed under: [...] Read more] |
