In a conversation with my father yesterday, we talked about how much the American quality of life has progressed over the past thirty or forty years. When he was younger, his father had a decent middle class job and my grandmother worked. They owned two, older used cars. Today, thanks to credit cards and other loaners, families of three or four own four new cars, SUVs, swimming pools, Abercrombie clothes, and countless other goods they do not need, nor can they afford. Bottom line: we are spending money we do not have. The mortgage problem has torpedoed our economy. What we think we have, we do not have.
